  • Questions about Borrowing and Extension

    How many books can I borrow?
    Academic staff can borrow up to 20 books for 2 months, graduate students can borrow up to 4 books for 15 days, doctorate and master students can borrow up to 6 books for 1 month, and administrative staff can borrow up to 4 books for 15 days. One needs a Gazi University Library membership card to borrow books.

    Can I borrow the bound periodicals?
    You can not borrow the bound periodicals.

    How can I reach books that are not available in our Library?
    You can obtain those books not available in our Library by means of interlibrary loan service. Make sure that the book or books are not available in our collection by performing a catalogue search in order to make use of this service.
    If not available in our Library, learn about the library where the book or books are available and apply to the loan unit. Only academic staff can use this service.

    Can I reserve a borrowed book for myself?
    If the book is borrowed by somebody else, you can reserve the book by using terminals at the entrance of the library. After the reserved book is returned, it is kept for 3 days in the Loan Unit.

    Can I renew a book I have borrowed?
    Students can renew a book by bringing it to the library if it is not reserved by anyone else and if s/he does not have an overdue book in hand. 
    Academic staff can renew a book via fax or e-mail if it is not reserved by anyone else and if s/he does not have an overdue book in hand. You can fill in Book renewal form in catalogue search on our website for renewing a book (for Academic Staff).

    Where can I borrow and return books?
    You can borrow and return books from Loan Department of our Library.

    I am a research assistant in another university. Can I borrow books from your library?
    You can borrow up to 5 books for 30 days by means of interlibrary loan service. Please contact Interlibrary Loan Department in the library of the institution you are a member to.

  • Questions about the General Catalogue

    What is the location number?
    The location number is a number ensuring you to easily locate a book on the shelf by its catalogue and subject. You can find books with the same subjects thanks to this system.

    Can I have access to the catalogue of Gazi Central Library from outside the campus?
    Yes. You can have access to the library catalogue page by using the link ‘Catalogue Search – User Account’ on http://www.lib.gazi.edu.tr.

  • Questions about Electronic and Printed Resources

    How can I learn about the availability of a periodical in the library?
    Log in to Periodicals (Printed – Electronic) section. Type the name of the journal in the ‘Word Search’.
    Note: You can see the subscription information of a journal by clicking on the INFORMATION link right beside the name of the journal. You can also access to subscribed electronic journals by the name of the journal via A to Z link on our web site.

    Where can I search for full text or bibliographic databases on my subject?
    There are databases and their explanations which we have subscribed to under the title of ‘Online Databases’ on the library web site.
    You can perform your search by determining the database for your subject in line with these explanations.

    What is reference search ‘Citation Index’ and how can I perform search?
    The Science Citation Index provides access to up-to-date and previous studies, information about authors, abstracts and persons who have referred to the relevant study. There are 3700 scientific and technical journals within 100 disciplines of the field of science in this resource. 
    The Social Science Citation Index provides access to up-to-date and previous studies, information about authors, abstracts and persons who have referred to the relevant study. There are 1700 scientific journals within 50 disciplines of the field of human sciences in this resource.
    You can perform search by clicking on Web of Science link on our web site or Web of Science link under the title of ‘Online Databases’ for ‘Citation Index’ search.

    How can I get the journals from bibliographic information I have found as a result of my search?
    You have to make search in Periodicals (Printed–Electronic) field to see whether the journal you search for is available in our library. If the catalogue indicates that the journal is PRINTED, you can get the journal on the first floor of the Library after confirming the availability of year, volume and issue information you have requested on the INFORMATION field right beside. However, if the catalogue indicates that the journal is available ONLINE, you can obtain the journal by using this link instead of coming to the library. 

    Are there any user guides about databases?
    No. But, you can contact 0312.2022956 – 2957 for further information about databases.   

    Are there any user training sessions for using electronic resources in the library?
    Yes, user training is provided to students in parallel to the requests of academic staff or other users. You can get an appointment for user training by contacting 0312 2022956-57.

    How can I search for articles?
    Open ‘Online Databases’ page on the library web page. You can make your search and get articles related to your research by clicking on links of databases under titles appropriate for your research among explanations right beside databases. If you want to perform a reference search, please choose ‘web of science’ from the alphabetical list and click “general search” button. Check one of the social sciences or science options and click ‘general search’ button.

    How can I search for Turkish articles?
    You can use the resource ‘Article Bibliography of Turkey’ for searching Turkish articles. You can find this resource in Reference Unit on the ground floor. 
    You can use http://uvt.ulakbim.gov.tr/uvt/ link for online Turkish article search.

    Do you perform article searches for us?
    No. When you come to the library, the reference librarian will make the necessary explanations and help you to make search.

    How can I have access to electronic journals related to my subject?
    Select ‘A to Z’ link on the library web site. You can do search on this page according to names of journals, subjects and publishers.

    How can I find book reviews and discussions?
    You can find book reviews and discussions in databases of ‘web of science’ and ‘EBSCOHost’.

    How can I access to a journal which I have found as a result of a search in Bibliographic databases?
    You can perform search in Periodicals (Printed – Electronic) or ‘A to Z’, or make use of the SDS catalogue. SDS catalogue covers journals at Gazi, Hacettepe,  Bilkent and ULAKBIM libraries.

    How can I have access to Master Theses and Dissertations?
    Theses are available in Thesis Department on the second floor of our library. You have to do search on our catalogue for access to theses. Type the subject you search for in the catalogue, type ‘thesis’ and start the search. Note down the classification number of the record. After having that number, apply to the Thesis Department. You can have detailed information on thesis search under the title of ‘Theses’ on our web site.

  • Questions about Access

    Can I use electronic journals and databases from computers outside the university?
    Electronic journals and databases are accessible from computers inside Gazi University Campus. However, academic staff can have access to those resources from where they are by making the proxy setting explained on the web site.

    Why am I being asked a password trying to have access to electronic journals?
    You can have access to electronic journals which our library is subscribed to from computers at Gazi University Campus without requiring a password. If the system requires a password when trying to connect to electronic journals inside the university, then there must be a problem with internet connection or link. Please contact 0312 202 29 56 or 0312 202 29 57 for the settlement of the problem.

    I am new to the university. How can I use the library?
    All registered Gazi University students can borrow books from the library when they apply to Library’s Loan Unit with their identification cards. For further information you can contact 0312 202 29 40 – 0312 202 29 41.

    Can I still use the library after graduating?
    You can still use printed and electronic resources inside the library and make copies of them. However, you can not borrow.

  • Questions about Interlibrary Loan and Document Supply

    Can I request articles and books from abroad?
    Yes. Only academic staff can use this service. You can apply to Loan Department for further information.

    How can I borrow books by interlibrary loan?
    Academic staff and research assistants are required to fill in Interlibrary Cooperation Book Request Form by coming to the library.

    I am a research assistant in another University. Can I borrow books from your library?
    You can borrow books by going to the library of the institution you belong to and by filling the interlibrary loan form signed by the authorized librarian.

    How many books and for how long can I borrow by interlibrary loan?
    You can borrow up to 5 books for 30 days by interlibrary loan. For further information please contact 0312 2022931.

    Can I renew the books that I borrowed by interlibrary loan?
    If the books are not reserved by another reader, renewal is possible by filling in a new form. For further information please contact 0312 2022940-41.

    Can I ask for the copy of an article from another library?
    You can require articles from Hacettepe, Gazi, METU and ULAKBÝM libraries within SDS. You are required to fill in a ‘request form’. Please contact Interlibrary Cooperation Department or 0312 2022931. This service is only available to academic staff.

  • Questions about Locations

    How can I find current journals?
    Current journals are available on the first floor of the library classified alphabetically according to journal names. You can learn about the availability of the journal you search for by using Periodicals Catalogue in the information desk on the first floor.

    Where can I find bound periodicals?
    Bound periodicals are available on the first floor of the library. On the right there are periodicals on science and health sciences, and on the left there are periodicals on social sciences.

    Where can I find master theses and dissertations?
    Theses are available in Thesis Department on the second floor of our library. You are required to make search for access to theses. Type the subject you search for in the catalogue, type ‘thesis’ and start the search. Note down the classification number of the record. After having that number, apply to the Thesis Department. You can have detailed information on thesis search under the title of ‘Theses’ on our web site.

  • Photocopy and Print-out Services

    Is there photocopy service available in the library?
    You can get photocopy service on the first, second and third floors of the library.

    Can I get printout of electronic articles?
    No. You can only save on a floppy disk or send to your e-mail address.

    The article I am interested in is too large to save on a floppy disk. What can I do?
    You can send it to your e-mail address.

    Where can I apply to for getting information?
    For information you can contact 0312 2022956-57 or apply to the Reference Department on the ground floor of the library.

    Can library tours or training sessions be arranged for introducing library resources and their usage?
    Yes. You can get an appointment by contacting 0312 202 29 56-57 and have this service on the predetermined day and hour.

    Whom can I apply to if I need help when I am using electronic resources?
    You can get help from reference librarians on this matter.

    What is a PDF file?
    It is a system for viewing full text electronic resources. Please select ‘PDF’ under the information about the article to see full text upon search in electronic journals and databases.

    How can I view a PDF article file?
    You can download Acrobat Reader software from internet with no charge, install the software and open PDF files.

    Can I buy floppy disks or CD-Rs in the library?
    No.

    Can I use my laptop in the library?
    Yes, you can. There is wireless internet service inside our library and user with wireless connection card in their laptops can use this service. Users who do not have wireless connection cards are provided cables for connection. Users without laptops can use computers of our library.

    Can I get a part-time job in the library?
    Yes. Gazi University students can get part-time jobs in the library within the academic year.

    Can I order a book from the library?
    Yes. Academic Staff of our University can request books when announcements are made on web sites of our University and Library about this matter. Please contact 0312 2022968 for detailed information.
